Our Take

While the holiday season may be filled with the familiar sounds of Bing Crosby and Mariah Carey on repeat, VARIOUS ARTISTS' "Holidays Rule" offers a fresh and eclectic take on Christmas classics.

The album kicks off with a bang with Lake Street Dive's soulful rendition of "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas," injecting a jazzy flair into the traditional tune. The Shins also deliver a hauntingly beautiful version of "Wonderful Christmastime," stripping away the synthesizers to reveal the song's melancholic heart.

However, not all tracks hit the mark. The Lumineers' cover of "Blue Christmas" feels like a missed opportunity, lacking the emotional depth to truly resonate. Similarly, Andrew Bird's take on "Auld Lang Syne" falls flat, failing to capture the song's sentimental spirit.

But fear not, as there are gems to be found on "Holidays Rule." Sharon Van Etten's hauntingly gorgeous performance of "Silent Night" is a standout, showcasing her delicate vocals and exquisite storytelling. And who can resist Jack Johnson and G.
