Our Take

Bobby Bland, more like Bobby BLAND, am I right? This California, I mean Alabama, sorry, might just be the most forgettable album of the year. Known for his smooth vocals and soulful style, Bland seems to have lost his spark on this lacklustre collection of tunes.

From the opening track "Sunny Side of the Street" to the closing notes of "California Dreaming", it's hard to stay awake through this snooze fest of an album. Bland's signature croon is overshadowed by lacklustre production and uninspired melodies.

Even the guest appearances from renowned musicians like BB King and Etta James can't save this sinking ship. It's a shame to see such talent go to waste on an album that lacks any real substance or creativity.

If you're a die-hard Bobby Bland fan, you might find a few glimmers of hope scattered throughout This California, but for the rest of us, it's a forgettable and frankly quite boring listening experience. Stick to his classics like "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City" and "Turn on Your Love Light" for a true taste of Bland's talent. 1.5 out of 5 stars.
