Our Take
Our Take
Let me just start off by saying that The Sword's latest album, High Country, is as wild and free as a drunken stag running through the Scottish Highlands. This Texan quartet has traded in their heavier, doom-laden sound for a more southern rock, psychedelic vibe, and boy, does it suit them well.
From the opening track "Empty Temples," with its groovy riffs and catchy chorus, to the trippy instrumental "Early Snow," this album takes you on a journey through the dusty backroads of America. Matt Bayles' production gives the songs an added layer of warmth and depth, making them feel like a sonic hug from your long-lost hippie uncle.
Vocalist J.D. Cronise's vocals soar and swirl, weaving tales of love, loss, and redemption that feel as timeless as the mountains that inspired them. And let's not forget about the guitar work of Kyle Shutt and Bryan Richie's bass, which are tighter than a Scottish terrier in a kilt.
However, this album is not without its flaws. Some tracks feel a tad derivative, almost like they were lifted straight out of a Lynyrd Skynyrd B-side collection. But hey, who said rock 'n' roll had to be original? Sometimes it's all about the vibes, man.
Overall, High Country is a rollicking ride through the great American tapestry, with just the right amount of twang and swagger to keep you coming back for more. So grab your cowboy hat, crank up the volume, and let The Sword take you to the highest peaks of musical ecstasy. Cheers, mates.
