Our Take
Avantasia's latest offering, "Here Be Dragons," is a fantastical journey into the realms of power metal and cheese. With epic ballads, soaring vocals, and enough guitar solos to make even Slash blush, this album is sure to transport you to a land of dragons and wizards. Lead vocalist Tobias Sammett's theatrical performance is as over-the-top as ever, with enough pomp and circumstance to rival a Queen concert. The dynamic interplay between vocalists and the bombastic orchestrations create a larger-than-life atmosphere that is both exhilarating and utterly ridiculous. The album's standout track, "Dragon Rider," is a blistering power anthem that will have you pumping your fist in the air and shouting along with the chorus. The lyrics may be cheesy as hell, but when delivered with such conviction, it's hard not to get swept up in the epic grandeur of it all. However, "Here Be Dragons" does suffer from a lack of originality at times, with many of the tracks feeling like they have been ripped straight from the power metal playbook. While the musicianship is top-notch and the production is crystal clear, there's a sense of déjà vu that keeps this album from truly standing out in a crowded genre. Overall, Avantasia's "Here Be Dragons" is a fun and bombastic romp through the world of power metal. While it may not break any new ground, fans of the genre will find plenty to enjoy in this over-the-top spectacle of an album.
