If only Hans Brinker himself could skate on water, because this album is truly a sinking ship. Hugh Martin's latest release, "Hans Brinker Or The Silver Skates," is a cacophony of discordant melodies and uninspired lyrics that left me feeling more frostbitten than dazzled.
From the opening track, "Frozen Pond Blues," it's clear that Martin is trying to channel his inner ice skater, but instead, he comes off as a clumsy oaf stumbling around on the rink. The repetitive hooks and lacklustre instrumentals make for a monotonous listening experience that left me wondering if Hans Brinker himself would be able to salvage this mess.
Tracks like "Skating on Thin Ice" and "Winter Wonderland Woes" attempt to capture the magic of a winter wonderland, but end up falling flat. Martin's attempts at humor and whimsy feel forced, like a bad stand-up comedian telling jokes on thin ice.
