Our Take

Stephen Malkmus, once the charismatic frontman of indie legends Pavement, has decided to take a bold leap into the realm of electronic music with his latest solo effort, "Groove Denied." And guess what? He's actually succeeded in creating an album that is both intriguing and slightly baffling.

From the glitchy beats of opening track "Belziger Faceplant" to the warped synth sounds of "Forget Your Place," Malkmus proves that he can indeed hold his own in this new sonic landscape. However, for fans expecting a guitar-driven indie rock extravaganza, you may find yourself scratching your head at times.

The album's standout track, "Viktor Borgia," showcases Malkmus at his most experimental, with layers of electronic loops and off-kilter vocals creating a hypnotic and immersive experience. It's a reminder that Malkmus is a true musical chameleon, constantly evolving and reinventing himself.

But while "Groove Denied" is undeniably ambitious, it does have its faults. Some tracks, such as "Come Get Me," feel a bit too disjointed and chaotic, leaving the listener more confused than enlightened.

Overall, Stephen Malkmus has proven once again that he is not afraid to take risks and push the boundaries of his sound. "Groove Denied" may not be for everyone, but for those willing to step out of their comfort zone, this album offers a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a musical genius.

About the artist

Stephen Malkmus

Stephen Malkmus, the indie rock legend and former frontman of Pavement, is a musical polymath with an uncanny ability to blend whimsical lyrics with intricate guitar riffs. With a career spanning over three decades, Malkmus has solidified his reputation as a maverick in the alternative music scene. Hailing from Stockton, California, Malkmus burst onto the scene in the early '90s with Pavement, a band that quickly became synonymous with the lo-fi aesthetic of the era. His unconventional songwriting style, marked by cryptic wordplay and off-kilter melodies, set him apart from his contemporaries and earned him a cult following that endures to this day. After Pavement disbanded in 1999, Malkmus embarked on a solo career that showcased his eclectic musical influences, from classic rock to indie pop. Armed with his trusty guitar and wry sense of humour, he has continued to push boundaries and defy expectations with each new release. Whether he's crafting introspective ballads or rollicking anthems, Malkmus brings a sense of artistry and unpredictability to his music that keeps fans guessing and critics on their toes. With a discography that spans solo albums, collaborations, and side projects, he has proven time and again that he is a force to be reckoned with in the ever-evolving landscape of indie rock. Stephen Malkmus is not just a musician – he's a mad scientist of sound, a wizard of weirdness, and a true original in a sea of imitators. So if you're looking for music that defies categorisation and challenges conventions, look no further than the one and only Stephen Malkmus.
