Our Take

Album Review: The Mountain Goats - Goths

The Mountain Goats are back with their latest album, Goths, and it's safe to say that they've taken a bit of a departure from their signature sound. Gone are the jangly guitars and frenetic energy, replaced instead by a lush, dark, and moody atmosphere that wouldn't sound out of place in a gothic cathedral.

Lead singer John Darnielle's distinctive vocals are as haunting as ever, weaving tales of vampires, ghosts, and other spooky creatures against a backdrop of swirling organs and atmospheric strings. Tracks like "Rain in Soho" and "The Grey King and the Silver Flame Attunement" transport the listener to a world where black eyeliner is mandatory and every night is Halloween.

But don't let the album title fool you - this is not a record for moping around in a dark room. There's a quirky, self-aware humour running through the lyrics that keeps things from getting too serious. In fact, songs like "Andrew Eldritch Is Moving Back to Leeds" and "We Do It Different on the West Coast" are downright cheeky in their irreverence.

Overall, Goths is a bold and unexpected move from The Mountain Goats, but one that pays off. It may not be what fans were expecting, but it's a welcome change of pace that shows the band's willingness to experiment and push boundaries. So put on your black lipstick, dim the lights, and give this album a spin - just don't blame us if you start feeling the urge to bust out your old Cure records.
