Our Take
Our Take
There are few things in life more delightful than a good ol' fashioned English opera, and D'Oyly Carte Opera's rendition of Gilbert and Sullivan's "HMS Pinafore" is no exception. From the moment the overture starts, you can't help but be transported back to a time when sailors wore funny hats and everyone broke out into song at the drop of a hat.
The vocal performances are top-notch, with each member of the ensemble bringing their own unique flair to their respective roles. The standout, of course, is the incomparable bass-baritone who tackles the role of Captain Corcoran with a blend of wit and gravitas that is truly mesmerizing.
But it's not just the vocals that shine on this album. The orchestra, under the expert direction of conductor John Pryce-Jones, provides a lush and dynamic backdrop for the singers, with each note swelling and receding like the tide.
Of course, it wouldn't be a Gilbert and Sullivan production without a healthy dose of humor, and this production doesn't disappoint. The witty lyrics and clever wordplay of the original libretto are delivered with impeccable timing and a twinkle in the eye that is sure to bring a smile to even the crustiest of opera-goers.
In conclusion, D'Oyly Carte Opera's "HMS Pinafore" is a rollicking good time from start to finish. So grab your monocle, dust off your top hat, and prepare to set sail on a musical journey that is equal parts silly and sublime. Bravo!
