Our Take

In the grand tradition of self-titled albums, GARBAGE's self-titled debut gets a fresh coat of paint with this remastered edition. But does it live up to its namesake, or is it just a load of rubbish?

From the opening track "Supervixen", it's clear that this album is a deliciously dark and twisted ride through the world of alternative rock. Shirley Manson's iconic vocals soar and snarl, perfectly complemented by the band's grungy, industrial sound. Tracks like "Only Happy When It Rains" and "Stupid Girl" showcase the band's knack for catchy hooks and irresistible energy.

But it's not all sunshine and roses – or, rather, black eyeliner and leather jackets. The remastered edition brings a new clarity and depth to the album, but it also highlights some of the dated production techniques that were so prevalent in the 90s. It's like finding an old mixtape in your parent's attic – nostalgic, but maybe not something you'd want to blast in your car on the way to work.

Overall, GARBAGE's debut album is a solid reminder of why they became alt-rock superstars in the first place. It may not be perfect, but it's definitely worth a spin for fans old and new. Just make sure to bring your Doc Martens and a bad attitude – you'll need them for this grunge-fuelled joyride.

About the artist

Garbage

Garbage: The Ultimate Pop Eccentrics What do you get when you combine a Scottish frontwoman with a couple of American producers? Only one of the most effortlessly cool and unapologetically unique bands in music history. Garbage burst onto the scene in the mid-90s with their self-titled debut album, and they haven't slowed down since. Shirley Manson, the enigmatic lead singer, has a voice that can go from a sweet whisper to a thunderous roar in the blink of an eye. And let's not forget her iconic style - who else could rock a red leather jumpsuit with such flair? But it's not just Manson who makes Garbage the powerhouse that they are. Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig are the masterminds behind the music, layering electronic beats, crunchy guitar riffs, and infectious melodies to create a sound that is truly their own. From hits like "Stupid Girl" to "Only Happy When It Rains," Garbage has consistently pushed the boundaries of pop music, blending genres like grunge, trip-hop, and industrial to create a sound that is as catchy as it is thought-provoking. In a world where cookie-cutter pop stars dominate the charts, Garbage stands out as a beacon of individuality and creativity. They may be a little rough around the edges, but that's what makes them so special. So next time you need a musical pick-me-up, just remember one thing - Garbage is anything but rubbish.
