About the artist

Horace Parlan

Horace Parlan may not be a household name like the Beyoncés and Adeles of the world, but his influence on the jazz scene is undeniable. With a career spanning over five decades, Parlan has established himself as a true jazz legend, known for his soulful piano playing and unique approach to composition. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1931, Parlan took up the piano at a young age and quickly developed a love for jazz music. He cut his teeth playing with some of the biggest names in the business, including Charles Mingus and Archie Shepp, before going on to establish himself as a solo artist in his own right. Parlan's playing style is characterized by its bluesy feel and infectious groove, drawing inspiration from the likes of Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington. His compositions are equally as captivating, blending elements of bebop, hard bop, and soul to create a sound that is uniquely his own. Despite facing challenges later in his career due to health issues, Parlan continued to perform and record music until his passing in 2017. His legacy lives on through his extensive discography, which includes over 30 albums as a leader and countless collaborations with some of the biggest names in jazz. So next time you're looking to expand your jazz repertoire, why not give Horace Parlan a listen? His music may not be as flashy or mainstream as some of his counterparts, but it's sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone willing to give it a chance.
