Our Take

Review of LIGHTNIN HOPKINS Four Classic Albums:

In the realm of blues, Lightnin Hopkins sits on a throne made of pure grit and soul. With the release of this compilation album featuring four of his classic works, we are reminded once again why Hopkins will forever be a legend in the music industry.

Starting off with the iconic album "Lightnin' Strikes," we are immediately transported to a smoky juke joint in the deep south, where Hopkins' raw vocals and masterful guitar playing take centre stage. From the haunting ballad "Blues in the Bottle" to the foot-stomping "See See Rider," this album is a rollercoaster of emotions that will leave you begging for more.

Next up is "Sings the Blues," where Hopkins' storytelling abilities truly shine. Whether he's crooning about lost love or the struggles of everyday life, his lyrics hit you right in the gut and leave you reeling. With tracks like "Mojo Hand" and "Black Cat Bone," it's impossible not to be completely captivated by his powerful storytelling.

Moving onto "Last Night Blues," Hopkins shows us a more vulnerable side as he delves into themes of heartbreak and redemption. The hauntingly beautiful "How Long Has the Train Been Gone" showcases Hopkins at his most introspective, while tracks like "So Blue" and "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" remind us of his unparalleled talent for expressing raw emotion.

Finally, we have "Country Blues," where Hopkins takes us back to the roots of the genre with stripped-down acoustic arrangements and heartfelt lyrics. From the playful "Coffee Blues" to the melancholic "Down the Road Blues," this album is a masterclass in traditional blues music that will leave you wanting to hit repeat over and over again.

Overall, Lightnin Hopkins' four classic albums are a must-have for any music lover looking to dive deep into the world of blues. With his distinctive voice, captivating storytelling, and unparalleled musicians

About the artist

Lightnin' Hopkins

Lightnin' Hopkins, born Sam John Hopkins in 1912 in Centerville, Texas, was a true blues legend with a guitar style that could make even the most jaded listener stand up and take notice. With his gravelly voice and effortless fingerpicking, he effortlessly blended traditional blues with his own unique twist, creating a sound that was unmistakably his own. Growing up in the Deep South, Hopkins learned to play the guitar from his older cousin, the legendary Blind Lemon Jefferson. He quickly honed his skills and began playing in local juke joints and on street corners, eventually making a name for himself in the Texas blues scene. But it wasn't just Hopkins' guitar playing that set him apart - it was also his ability to tell a story. His lyrics were often raw and honest, reflecting the struggles of everyday life in the South. Whether he was singing about love, loss, or redemption, Hopkins always managed to strike a chord with his listeners. But it wasn't just his music that made Hopkins a true legend - it was also his larger-than-life personality. Known for his sharp wit and infectious charm, he could captivate an audience like no other. Whether he was playing to a small crowd in a smoky bar or a packed house at a music festival, Hopkins always gave it his all. Sadly, Hopkins passed away in 1982, but his music lives on. With a discography that spans over 50 albums, he left behind a legacy that continues to inspire musicians to this day. So next time you're in need of some soul-stirring blues, look no further than Lightnin' Hopkins - a true master of his craft.
