Our Take
Our Take
Step right up, jazz enthusiasts and avant-garde aficionados, because Albert Ayler's First Recordings Vol. 2 is here to blow your socks off! This album is like a sonic rollercoaster, with Ayler's raw and powerful saxophone leading the charge through a whirlwind of experimental jazz madness.
From the moment you press play, you're transported to a world where rules are meant to be broken and boundaries are meant to be pushed. Ayler's improvisational skills are on full display here, as he fearlessly navigates through dissonant melodies and chaotic rhythms with the finesse of a seasoned pro.
Tracks like "Moanin'" and "Summertime" showcase Ayler's knack for taking familiar tunes and turning them on their head, injecting them with his own brand of free jazz energy. And let's not forget about his bandmates, whose tight musicianship provides the perfect backdrop for Ayler's sonic explorations.
The production on this album may be a bit rough around the edges, but that only adds to its charm. It's like listening to a group of friends jamming in a smoky basement, pouring their hearts out and creating magic in the process.
So if you're in the mood for something a little bit different, a little bit wild, and a whole lot of fun, then look no further than Albert Ayler's First Recordings Vol. 2. This is jazz at its most adventurous, its most daring, and its most captivating. Ayler may be gone, but his music lives on, and we are all the better for it.

About the artist
Albert Ayler
Ah, Albert Ayler – the man, the myth, the legend. This avant-garde saxophonist was a force to be reckoned with in the 1960s, pushing the boundaries of jazz like no one else before him. With his frenetic playing style and freeform improvisations, Ayler was the sonic equivalent of a hurricane – wild, unpredictable, and utterly mesmerizing. Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1936, Ayler cut his teeth playing in R&B bands before making the switch to free jazz in the early 1960s. It was here that he truly found his voice, unleashing a torrent of blistering solos and guttural screams that set him apart from his peers. His 1964 album "Spiritual Unity" is a masterpiece of the genre, a cacophonous whirlwind of sound that still sounds fresh and vital over half a century later. But Ayler's music was not just about technical prowess – it was about emotion, about spirituality, about transcending the confines of traditional jazz. His compositions were steeped in the blues and gospel traditions, with echoes of John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman reverberating throughout. To listen to an Albert Ayler record is to take a journey into the unknown, to be swept up in a whirlwind of sound that is at once exhilarating and terrifying. Sadly, Ayler's life was cut tragically short in 1970, when he was found dead in New York's East River at the age of just 34. But his legacy lives on, inspiring countless musicians to push the boundaries of their art and challenge the status quo. So here's to you, Albert Ayler – may your spirit continue to soar, forever restless, forever free.
