Our Take
Dwight Yoakam's performance at the Fillmore Auditorium on December 31, 1985, was a twang-filled extravaganza that left audiences in San Francisco reeling with delight. The country crooner may not be a household name this side of the pond, but his energy and charisma on stage could convert even the most ardent city-slicker into a die-hard fan. Opening with a boot-stomping rendition of "Guitars, Cadillacs," Yoakam wasted no time in showcasing his impressive vocal range and impressive guitar skills. The audience was soon on their feet, clapping and hollering as if they were at a hoedown in the heart of Texas. It was a sight to behold, let me tell you. Highlights of the evening included Yoakam's heartfelt ballad "Honky Tonk Man" and the raucous crowd-pleaser "Little Sister." His band, the Babylonian Cowgirls, provided the perfect accompaniment, effortlessly blending rockabilly with country twang. By the time Yoakam closed the set with an electric rendition of "Fast as You," the Fillmore Auditorium was buzzing with pure euphoria. It may have been New Year's Eve, but for that brief moment, all that mattered was the music.
