Our Take
Our Take
2ND GRADE, the DIY project consisting of Peter Gill and the appropriately named Ryan Handy, have comfortably settled into their own niche with their latest release, "Easy Listening." This album sees the duo leaning heavily into their lo-fi sound, with catchy hooks and jangly guitars that harken back to the golden days of indie rock.
From the first track, "When You Were My Sharona," it's clear that 2ND GRADE are not taking themselves too seriously. With tongue-in-cheek lyrics and infectious melodies, the duo have created a record that is both charmingly amateurish and incredibly endearing.
Tracks like "Snakes & Ladders" and "Dinosaur" showcase the band's knack for crafting simple yet effective pop songs that stick in your head long after the final chord has faded. The lo-fi production only adds to the album's charm, giving it a warm, nostalgic feel that is hard to resist.
However, "Easy Listening" is not without its missteps. The slower tracks like "Waterfall" and "Wish You Were Here" can feel a bit aimless and meandering, lacking the energy and punch of the album's more upbeat moments.
Overall, 2ND GRADE have delivered a solid effort with "Easy Listening." While not groundbreaking or revolutionary, the album is a fun, breezy listen that is sure to put a smile on your face. Sit back, relax, and let 2ND GRADE take you on a journey through their quirky, lo-fi world. You won't be disappointed.

About the artist
2nd Grade
With a sound that can only be described as a whimsical cacophony of electric ukulele riffs and kazoo solos, 2ND GRADE is the indie pop sensation that has taken the music world by storm. Hailing from the bustling streets of Brooklyn, this eccentric four-piece band is not your average run-of-the-mill group. Lead singer and guitarist, Billy "The Wizard" Johnson, brings a unique energy to the stage with his wild antics and contagious enthusiasm. His lyrics, delivered in a high-pitched falsetto, are reminiscent of a circus ringmaster on a sugar high – absurd, yet strangely profound. Backing him up is the rhythm section, consisting of bassist Sally "Boom Boom" Thompson and drummer Tommy "Thunderfoot" O'Connell. Their tight grooves and dynamic beats provide the perfect foundation for Johnson's zany musical musings. But what truly sets 2ND GRADE apart from the rest is their penchant for experimentation. From incorporating toy instruments into their live performances to sampling obscure 70s commercials in their latest album, "Banana Peel Boogie," this band is not afraid to push the boundaries of conventional music. So, if you're looking for a band that will make you laugh, cry, and question your sanity all in the span of a single song, look no further than 2ND GRADE. Just be prepared to have their infectious melodies stuck in your head for days on end – trust us, it's a risk worth taking.
