Our Take

Ah, the sweet sounds of Augustus Pablo's Dubbing On Bond Street. This album is like a smooth cup of Earl Grey on a rainy day in London - comforting yet still full of surprises.

Pablo's unique blend of dub reggae and melodica creates a soundscape that is otherworldly yet strangely familiar. It's like being transported to a smoky underground club in the heart of Kingston, with a cheeky nod to the British influence on Jamaican music.

The opening track, "Java," sets the tone perfectly with its hypnotic rhythms and dreamy melodies. It's like floating on a cloud made of basslines and reverb, with Pablo's melodica leading the way like a pied piper of dub.

As the album progresses, tracks like "Guiding Star" and "East of the River Nile" showcase Pablo's masterful production skills, blending traditional Jamaican sounds with a modern twist. It's like watching a black cab navigate the bustling streets of London while blasting dub reggae from the speakers.

Overall, Dubbing On Bond Street is a must-listen for any music lover, whether you're a hardcore reggae fan or just looking to expand your musical horizons. So put on your best suit, grab a cuppa, and let Augustus Pablo take you on a musical journey through Bond Street and beyond. Cheers, mate!

About the artist

Augustus Pablo

One of Jamaica's most revered and innovative musicians, Augustus Pablo was a true pioneer in the world of reggae music. Born Horace Swaby in St. Andrew, Jamaica in 1953, Pablo began his musical career as a skilled melodica player, earning his nickname from his admiration of Roman Emperor Augustus and his tendency to play melodica solos over classic reggae rhythms. Pablo's unique sound was a fusion of traditional Jamaican rhythms with elements of jazz and classical music, creating a hypnotic and ethereal vibe that set him apart from his contemporaries. His use of the melodica as a lead instrument was groundbreaking, and his innovative production techniques helped to define the sound of reggae in the 1970s. Despite his early success, Pablo was known for his eccentricities and reclusive nature, preferring to spend his time in his Kingston studio surrounded by his beloved vintage synthesizers and dub equipment. His enigmatic persona only added to his mystique, and his influence can still be felt in the music of artists ranging from Massive Attack to King Tubby. In a career that spanned over three decades, Augustus Pablo released numerous influential albums, including the classic "King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown", which is widely regarded as one of the greatest dub albums of all time. His legacy continues to inspire a new generation of musicians, and his music remains as fresh and vital as ever. Augustus Pablo may have been a man of few words, but his music spoke volumes.
