Our Take
If rock 'n' roll had a love child with a slice of blackcurrant jam-slathered toast, it would sound a little something like The Darkness' latest release, "Dreams On Toast." This album is a glorious fusion of glam rock theatrics, cheeky lyrics, and infectious hooks that will have you dancing around your living room in your most outrageous outfit. From the opening track "Toastmania" to the closing ballad "Dreaming in Darkness," the band takes us on a wild ride through a world of absurd dreams and fantastical adventures. Lead vocalist Justin Hawkins' falsetto soars to dizzying heights, while the rest of the band provides a solid foundation of crunchy guitars and thunderous drums. The standout track has to be "Buttered Bliss," a deliciously decadent ode to the joys of breakfast foods and late-night escapades. The retro-inspired production on this track is absolutely top-notch, capturing the essence of 70s rock with a modern twist. However, not every track on "Dreams On Toast" hits the mark. Some songs veer dangerously close to self-parody, with lyrics that border on the nonsensical and melodies that feel a tad too derivative. But hey, when you're having this much fun, who really cares? In conclusion, "Dreams On Toast" is a bold and unabashedly quirky album that showcases The Darkness at their most flamboyant and fun. If you're in need of a musical pick-me-up, look no further than this delightful slice of rock 'n' roll goodness.
