Our Take
Our Take
Jesus Lizard's "Down" Deluxe Edition is a raucous rollercoaster of energy and grit that leaves you exhilarated and exhausted in equal measure. This album, originally released in 1994, feels just as fresh and vital today as it did over two decades ago.
The opening track, "Fly on the Wall," kicks things off with a frenetic pace and pounding drums that set the tone for the rest of the record. Lead singer David Yow's vocals are as unhinged and unpredictable as ever, veering from guttural growls to piercing screams with reckless abandon.
Tracks like "Nub" and "Dancing Naked Ladies" showcase the band's signature blend of noise rock and post-punk, with guitarist Duane Denison's angular riffs cutting through the chaos like a hot knife through butter. The rhythm section of drummer Mac McNeilly and bassist David Wm. Sims is as tight and propulsive as ever, keeping the whole thing hurtling forward at breakneck speed.
The Deluxe Edition includes a treasure trove of bonus tracks and live recordings that showcase the band's raw, untamed energy in a live setting. Highlights include a blistering rendition of "Mouth Breather" and a cover of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl" that is equal parts faithful and ferocious.
Overall, "Down" Deluxe Edition is a must-have for fans of noise rock and post-punk alike. It's a wild, untamed beast of an album that refuses to be tamed or contained. Put simply, Jesus Lizard are still the kings of chaos, and "Down" is their crowning achievement.

About the artist
The Jesus Lizard
Hailing from good ol' Chicago, Jesus Lizard are not your average run-of-the-mill band. With their blistering guitars, primal drum beats, and incomprehensible vocals, they have been making waves in the underground music scene for over three decades. Led by the enigmatic frontman David Yow, Jesus Lizard is a force to be reckoned with on stage, known for their intense and energetic live performances that leave audiences in awe. Their music is a fierce and cathartic blend of noise rock, punk, and post-hardcore, with songs that are as abrasive as they are infectious. Tracks like "Mouth Breather" and "Puss" showcase the band's raw power and unapologetic attitude, while more experimental tracks like "Monkey Trick" demonstrate their willingness to push boundaries and explore new sonic territories. Jesus Lizard's influence can be felt far and wide, with bands like Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and Shellac citing them as major inspirations. Despite their critical acclaim and dedicated fanbase, Jesus Lizard have always remained true to their DIY roots, eschewing mainstream success in favor of artistic integrity and creative freedom. So, if you're looking for music that will make your heart race and your ears bleed, look no further than Jesus Lizard. With their uncompromising sound and electrifying stage presence, this band is not to be missed. Just be sure to bring your earplugs – you're gonna need 'em.
