Our Take
Ah, Disturbed. The band that has managed to divide audiences like Marmite – you either love them or you hate them. And their latest release, "Divisive" on purple vinyl, is no exception to this rule. The album kicks off with a bang, with frontman David Draiman's signature gravelly vocals cutting through the heavy riffs like a chainsaw through butter. From the aggressive opener "Strife" to the epic ballad "Broken Pieces," Disturbed showcase their range of musical abilities. But here's where things get interesting. The band experiments with different sounds on this album, incorporating elements of electronic music and even some unexpected jazz influences. It's a bold move, and one that pays off in some moments, but falls flat in others. One standout track is "Dissonance," a hauntingly beautiful ballad that showcases Draiman's emotive vocals like never before. The juxtaposition of his powerful voice against the delicate instrumentation is truly mesmerising. However, not every track hits the mark. "Divided" feels like a paint-by-numbers Disturbed song, lacking the creativity and flair of the other tracks on the album. And the less said about the cringe-inducing spoken word interlude on "Chaos," the better. Overall, "Divisive" is a mixed bag. While it shows flashes of brilliance, it ultimately falls short of being a cohesive and satisfying listen. But hey, if you're a die-hard Disturbed fan, you'll probably love it. Everyone else? Maybe give it a spin on Spotify first.
