Our Take
Our Take
MICK CLARKE's latest album "Diggin Down / Bent Frets / Steppin Out" is a discombobulated mess of bluesy rock tunes that will leave you scratching your head in confusion. From the opening track, it's clear that Clarke is trying way too hard to blend genres and create something innovative, but instead, he ends up with a mishmash of sounds that never quite gel together.
The title track, "Diggin Down," starts off promisingly enough with some funky guitar riffs, but quickly devolves into a cacophony of noise that assaults your eardrums. Clarke's vocals are pitchy and lackluster, and the lyrics seem like they were pulled straight from a blues cliche handbook.
"Bent Frets" fares no better, with its meandering guitar solos and lack of any discernible melody. Clarke's attempts at introspective lyrics fall flat, leaving the listener feeling more bored than enlightened.
As for "Steppin Out," the album's closing track, it's a forgettable mess of forgettable instrumentation and forgettable vocals. Clarke seems to be stuck in a time warp, unable to break free from the tired cliches of the blues rock genre.
Overall, "Diggin Down / Bent Frets / Steppin Out" is a misguided attempt at innovation that falls flat on its face. Clarke would do well to stick to what he knows best and leave the genre-bending to the pros.
