DEVIN MAXWELL Works 2011-14 is a sonic journey that defies categorisation, much like trying to explain cricket to a non-British person - confusing, yet somehow captivating.
Maxwell's eclectic mix of genres, from neo-soul to experimental electronica, keeps the listener on their toes like a pub crawl on a Friday night. His use of unconventional instruments and unexpected rhythms is as surprising as finding out that the Queen has a secret passion for grime music.
The album opens with "Soulful Strut," a funky number that could easily be the soundtrack to a '70s cop show set in London. It's impossible not to groove along to the infectious bassline, like trying to resist the urge to put on a ridiculous hat at a wedding.
But just when you think you've got Maxwell all figured out, he hits you with "Interstellar Odyssey," a spacey composition that feels like floating through the cosmos in a Mini Cooper. It's a bold move, like ordering a curry with extra chillies after one too many pints.
