Our Take
Desperate Journalist's self-titled debut album is a delicious blend of dark wave, post-punk, and irresistible hooks that will have you dancing in your Doc Martens. Frontwoman Jo Bevan's haunting vocals are a perfect match for the band's driving guitar riffs and pulsating rhythms.
Lead single "Control" is a standout track, with its infectious chorus and brooding atmosphere that will have you hitting repeat button faster than you can say, "Where's my eyeliner?". The band expertly weaves together elements of bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Cure, while adding their own unique stamp on the genre.
Tracks like "Hollow" and "Cristina" showcase the band's ability to create atmospheric and emotionally charged music that will send shivers down your spine. The album's production, courtesy of former Killing Joke bassist Youth, is top-notch and adds an extra layer of polish to an already fantastic collection of songs.
Desperate Journalist may not reinvent the wheel, but they certainly know how to take it for a spin.
