Claude Debussy once said, “Music is the space between the notes.” Well, with CROWE / MARTINEAU’s latest offering, "Songs Volume 4," there’s certainly a lot of space. Maybe a little too much.

This album is like stepping into a time machine and landing in the elegant salons of 19th century Paris. But instead of being greeted by the avant-garde sounds of Debussy, you’re met with a lacklustre performance that struggles to capture the composer’s innovative spirit.

The vocal performances on this album are solid, with Martineau’s accompaniment providing a solid foundation for Crowe’s soaring soprano. However, there’s a definite lack of passion in their delivery, leaving the listener yearning for more emotion and depth.

Tracks like "Feux d'artifice" and "Saurez-vous pas?" showcase Debussy’s unique harmonies and melodic twists, but fail to truly transport the listener to another world. It’s like being served a beautifully plated dish that lacks seasoning – aesthetically pleasing, but ultimately bland.

Overall, "Songs Volume 4" is a respectable attempt at tackling Debussy’s challenging compositions, but falls short of capturing the magic that made the composer a legend. So if you’re looking for a whimsical journey through the world of French art song, you’re better off exploring elsewhere. Debussy deserves better, and so do you.
