The Mojo Men's latest release "Dance With Me: The Autumn Singles" may have been produced by the legendary Sly Stone, but unfortunately, it falls a bit flat. The album kicks off with a bizarre fusion of psychedelic rock and funk, leaving listeners scratching their heads wondering where it all went wrong.
Songs like "Groovy Times" and "Autumn Leaves" attempt to capture a nostalgic mood, but end up feeling like a bad 70s throwback party gone wrong. The production values are certainly top-notch, but they can't quite make up for the lacklustre songwriting.
The Mojo Men themselves seem unsure of their own sound, with each track sounding like a different band trying to find their footing. It's a shame, because there are fleeting moments of potential brilliance scattered throughout the album.
Perhaps the biggest misstep is the lead single "Dance With Me", which comes off as a poor imitation of Sly Stone's own work. It's as if the Mojo Men are desperately trying to channel their producer's iconic sound, but failing miserably in the process.
