Cachao

Hailed as the "Father of Mambo," CACHAO was a Cuban-born bassist and composer who revolutionized Latin music in the 20th century. With a career spanning over seven decades, CACHAO's influence can be felt in genres ranging from salsa to jazz. Born Israel López Valdés in Havana, Cuba in 1918, CACHAO began his musical career playing bass in his uncle's orchestra at the age of 13. He quickly became known for his innovative playing style, incorporating elements of Cuban folk music and jazz into his compositions. In the 1950s, CACHAO moved to New York City, where he continued to push the boundaries of Latin music, collaborating with artists such as Tito Puente and Dizzy Gillespie. His album "Cuban Jam Sessions in Miniature" is considered a classic of the genre, showcasing his virtuosic bass playing and inventive arrangements. Despite his immense talent and influence, CACHAO remained relatively unknown outside of the Latin music community until the late 1990s, when he experienced a resurgence in popularity thanks to a Grammy-winning documentary about his life and music.
