Our Take

Anita O'Day and Jimmy Giuffre's collaborative album Cool Heat is like a cheeky cocktail you never knew you needed. With O'Day's sultry vocals and Giuffre's jazzy arrangements, it's a match made in musical heaven. The album kicks off with the toe-tapping "The Train to Rush Street," setting the tone for a swinging good time.

Tracks like "That's Your Red Wagon" and "Four Brothers" showcase O'Day's powerhouse voice, while Giuffre's smooth saxophone playing adds a touch of cool to each song. The bonus track "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" is a delightful surprise, leaving you wishing there were more hidden gems to uncover.

Cool Heat is a perfect blend of old-school charm and modern flair. It's the kind of album you'll want to listen to with a martini in hand, feeling like the coolest cat in town. So gather your friends, put on your dancing shoes, and let Anita O'Day and Jimmy Giuffre transport you to a bygone era of jazz and sophistication. Trust me, you won't regret it. Cheers!

About the artist

Anita O'Day & Jimmy Giuffre

ANITA O'DAY Anita O'Day, the jazz songstress with a voice as smooth as a perfectly aged scotch, has been captivating audiences since the 1940s. With her signature brassy tone and impeccable sense of rhythm, O'Day has cemented her place as one of the most iconic jazz vocalists of all time. Born Anita Belle Colton on October 18, 1919, in Chicago, O'Day's career took off when she joined Gene Krupa's band in 1941. From there, she went on to work with jazz legends like Stan Kenton, Roy Eldridge, and Oscar Peterson. O'Day's unique phrasing and fearless improvisation have earned her a legion of devoted fans, including fellow musicians like Ella Fitzgerald and Mel Tormé. But O'Day's journey hasn't been without its challenges. From battling addiction to facing discrimination as a woman in the male-dominated world of jazz, she has never let anything stand in the way of her music. And that's why, even at 92 years old, Anita O'Day's voice still shines as brightly as ever. JIMMY GIUFFRE Jimmy Giuffre, the enigmatic multi-instrumentalist and composer, is a true maverick of the jazz world. With his genre-defying blend of cool jazz, free jazz, and chamber music, Giuffre has been pushing the boundaries of what's possible in music for over six decades. Born on April 26, 1921, in Dallas, Texas, Giuffre began his career as a saxophonist, but quickly established himself as a talented clarinetist and composer. His pioneering work with his Jimmy Giuffre 3 trio, featuring Jim Hall on guitar and Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, is still celebrated for its innovative approach to improvisation and composition. Giuffre's music is a testament to his restless spirit and uncompromising vision
