Our Take
Our Take
Upon first listen, BRAIDS' latest album, Companion, feels like a whimsical journey through the depths of a mad scientist's laboratory. The Canadian trio have managed to concoct a sonic potion that is equal parts enchanting and bewildering.
The album opens with "Here 4 U," a track that lures you in with its hypnotic beats and ethereal vocals. As the song progresses, you can't help but feel like you're being transported to a parallel universe where dancing is the only form of communication.
Throughout the album, BRAIDS showcase their mastery of experimentation, blending elements of indie pop, electronic, and avant-garde to create a sound that is uniquely their own. Tracks like "Just Take My Money" and "Crop Circles" have a playful quality to them, as if the band are inviting you to join them in their sonic playground.
However, Companion is not without its moments of introspection. Songs like "Close Enough" and "Scape" delve into the darker corners of the mind, exploring themes of longing and isolation. But even in these more somber moments, BRAIDS manage to infuse a sense of hope and resilience.
Overall, Companion is a testament to BRAIDS' ability to push boundaries and defy expectations. With its sparkling production and intricate melodies, this album is a must-listen for anyone who craves a bit of musical adventure in their lives.

About the artist
Braids
Montreal-based trio BRAIDS are the embodiment of experimental indie pop at its finest. Consisting of Raphaelle Standell-Preston on vocals and guitars, Austin Tufts on drums, and Taylor Smith on bass, this dynamic group has been making waves in the music scene since their formation in 2007. With their ethereal vocals, intricate melodies, and shimmery production, BRAIDS have carved out a niche for themselves in the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary music. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of influences, from Bjork to Radiohead to The Knife, BRAIDS create a sound that is uniquely their own. Standell-Preston's hauntingly beautiful vocals soar over lush, dreamy soundscapes, painting a vivid picture of love, loss, and everything in between. Tufts' dynamic drumming and Smith's groovy basslines provide the perfect backdrop for Standell-Preston's emotive lyrics, creating a sonic landscape that is both captivating and immersive. Their latest album, "Shadow Offering", is a masterclass in sonic experimentation and emotional depth. From the hypnotic opener "Here 4 U" to the melancholic closer "Note to Self", BRAIDS take listeners on a journey through the depths of human emotion, exploring themes of love, loss, and self-discovery with exquisite craftsmanship and artistry. With their unparalleled musicianship and undeniable charisma, BRAIDS are a force to be reckoned with in the world of indie pop. Whether they're playing sold-out shows at iconic venues like the Roundhouse in London or headlining major festivals like Primavera Sound, BRAIDS continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in music, leaving audiences breathless and inspired in their wake.
