About the artist

Minnie Riperton

Profile: Minnie Riperton Minnie Riperton, the soulful songbird with a vocal range that could shatter glass (in the best way possible), burst onto the music scene in the 1970s with her unique blend of R&B, funk, and jazz. Known for her incredible five-octave range and effortlessly smooth falsetto, Riperton quickly became a household name with hits like "Lovin' You" and "Inside My Love". Born and raised in Chicago, Riperton's musical journey began at a young age when she joined a girl group called The Gems. It didn't take long for her to stand out amongst the crowd with her powerhouse vocals and undeniable stage presence. She soon caught the attention of legendary producer Stevie Wonder, who helped launch her solo career. Riperton's debut album, "Come to My Garden", set the tone for her illustrious career, showcasing her incredible vocal range and lyrical depth. With each subsequent album, Riperton continued to push the boundaries of traditional soul music, incorporating elements of psychedelia and progressive jazz into her sound. Tragically, Riperton's career was cut short when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in the late 1970s. Despite her illness, she continued to record music and perform until her untimely death in 1979. Her legacy as one of the greatest vocalists of all time lives on through her music, which continues to inspire new generations of artists. Minnie Riperton may have left us too soon, but her impact on the music world is undeniable. With her angelic voice and boundless creativity, Riperton will forever be remembered as a true icon of soul music.
