Our Take

BLINK-182's latest offering, "California," is like a warm pint of flat lager - familiar, slightly disappointing, but still manages to hit the spot.

The trio, known for their infectious pop-punk sound, delivers a predictable yet enjoyable collection of tracks that harken back to their early days of angst and adolescent rebellion. From the catchy hooks of "Bored to Death" to the nostalgic vibes of "Kings of the Weekend," BLINK-182 sticks to their tried-and-true formula of catchy melodies and relatable lyrics.

However, "California" also sees the band experimenting with new sounds, such as the electronic-infused "Los Angeles" and the acoustic ballad "Home is Such a Lonely Place." While these departures from their signature sound may not always hit the mark, they show that BLINK-182 is not afraid to take risks and evolve as a band.

Overall, "California" is a solid addition to BLINK-182's discography, showcasing their ability to stay true to their roots while also embracing growth and experimentation. Despite its flaws, this album will undoubtedly please die-hard fans and serve as a fun, nostalgic trip down memory lane for those who grew up listening to the band. BLINK-182 may not be reinventing the wheel with "California," but sometimes, a reliable old pair of Doc Martens is all you need.

About the artist

Blink-182

Blink-182 are the pop-punk pioneers who have been setting teenage hearts aflutter since the '90s. With their catchy hooks, infectious energy, and cheeky lyrics, this trio from California (yeah, we know, not exactly the punk mecca of the world) have managed to carve out a unique space in the alt-rock scene. Frontman Mark Hoppus, the eternal goofball with a penchant for dad jokes, leads the charge with his distinctive vocals and energetic stage presence. Guitarist Matt Skiba (formerly of Alkaline Trio) brings a darker, more brooding edge to the band's sound, while drummer Travis Barker is a veritable beast behind the kit, with lightning-fast beats and jaw-dropping chops. Their breakthrough album, "Enema of the State," catapulted Blink-182 into the mainstream with hits like "All the Small Things" and "What's My Age Again?" Since then, they've continued to churn out anthemic pop-punk gems that speak to the inner adolescence in all of us. But Blink-182 are more than just a nostalgia trip for late '90s kids. They've evolved with the times, experimenting with different styles and sounds while still maintaining their signature wit and charm. From the angst-ridden ballads of "Adam's Song" to the anthemic rockers of "Feeling This," Blink-182 have proven time and time again that they're more than just a one-trick pony. So whether you're a die-hard Blink fan from way back or a newcomer to their infectious brand of punk rock, there's no denying the enduring appeal of this irreverent trio. Blink-182 may have grown up (slightly) over the years, but their spirit of youthful rebellion and infectious energy remains as strong as ever.
