Our Take
Our Take
Phil Collins - ...But Seriously
Rating: 5/10
Once dubbed as the king of the drum fill, Phil Collins makes a somewhat lacklustre return with his album "…But Seriously." A departure from his more upbeat hits, this record is a mixed bag of introspective ballads and political anthems that never quite hit the mark.
The album opens with the sombre track "Hang in Long Enough," a classic Collins composition that showcases his signature vocals and impeccable drumming skills. However, as the album progresses, it becomes clear that Collins is trying a bit too hard to shed his "pop star" image and delve into more serious subject matter.
Tracks like "Another Day in Paradise" and "Do You Remember?" touch on issues like homelessness and apartheid, but they lack the emotional depth needed to truly resonate with the listener. Collins' attempts at social commentary feel heavy-handed and forced, detracting from the overall listening experience.
While there are a few standout moments on the album, such as the soulful "I Wish It Would Rain Down," overall "…But Seriously" falls flat. Collins seems torn between his pop sensibilities and his desire to be taken seriously as an artist, resulting in a collection of songs that never quite find their footing.
In the end, "…But Seriously" is a decent effort from a seasoned musician, but it fails to capture the magic of Collins' earlier work. It's worth a listen for die-hard fans, but casual listeners may want to stick to his more iconic hits.
