Our Take

Ah, the 80s – a time of questionable fashion choices, questionable music videos, and, apparently, questionable business practices. Men at Work's debut album, "Business As Usual," takes us back to a time when the mere mention of the word "work" was enough to induce a collective groan from the population. And yet, somehow, these Aussie rockers managed to make the monotony of the 9-5 grind sound... well, not so bad. From the opening notes of "Who Can It Be Now?" to the infectious chorus of "Down Under," Men at Work serve up a healthy dose of infectious hooks, witty lyrics, and, dare I say it, actual talent. Frontman Colin Hay's distinctive vocals are the icing on the cake, injecting each track with a sense of urgency and emotion that is sorely lacking in today's cookie-cutter pop landscape. But what really sets "Business As Usual" apart from the pack is its irreverent sense of humour. Songs like "Be Good Johnny" and "Helpless Automation" poke fun at the mundanity of modern life, while tracks like "Underground" and "Touching the Untouchables" tackle weightier subjects like politics and social injustice with a sly wink and a nudge. In short, "Business As Usual" may not reinvent the wheel, but it does remind us that sometimes, a little levity is all we need to make it through the daily grind. So dust off your shoulder pads, turn up the volume, and prepare to be transported back to a time when work was just another four-letter word. Cheers, mate.

About the artist

Men at Work

MEN AT WORK: The Strine Sensations Men at Work, the iconic Australian band that burst onto the music scene in the 1980s, have left an indelible mark on the history of rock and pop. Led by the enigmatic frontman Colin Hay, this quintet from Down Under has been hailed as iconic music masters, blending catchy melodies with socially conscious lyrics. Their debut album, "Business as Usual," was a smash hit, achieving multi-platinum status and dominating the airwaves with anthems like "Down Under" and "Who Can It Be Now?" The band's distinctive sound, characterized by Colin Hay's unmistakable vocals and Greg Ham's infectious saxophone riffs, set them apart from their contemporaries. Despite their initial success, Men at Work faced their fair share of challenges. Legal disputes over the iconic flute riff in "Down Under" brought the band to the brink of collapse, leading to a hiatus in the late 1980s. However, they made a triumphant return to the stage in the 2000s, showcasing their enduring popularity and musical prowess. Men at Work's influence can still be felt in the music industry today, with artists citing them as inspiration for their own work. From indie rock to pop, their legacy lives on through their timeless hits and innovative sound. So, if you're looking for a taste of Australian music history with a sprinkle of wit and charm, look no further than Men at Work. These "Men at play" have proven time and time again that their music is as relevant and exciting as ever. Cheers to the land Down Under and the musical magic of Men at Work.
