Our Take

The latest album from alt-rock legends Dinosaur Jr., "Bug," is a delightful blend of distortion, feedback, and nostalgia. Released in 1988, this album may be older than your dad's car, but it still packs a punch that will make you want to jump around like a 90s teenager at a house party. J Mascis' signature screeching guitar riffs are as gnarly as ever, perfectly complemented by Lou Barlow's thumping bass lines and Murph's relentless drumming. The opening track, "Freak Scene," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its infectious energy and rebellious spirit. Tracks like "No Bones" and "They Always Come" showcase Dinosaur Jr.'s ability to seamlessly blend punk and alternative rock influences into a sound that is uniquely their own. The raw, unpolished production only adds to the album's charm, giving it a DIY feel that is both endearing and exhilarating. With its crunchy guitars, bittersweet lyrics, and irresistibly catchy melodies, "Bug" is a true gem of the alternative rock genre. It may not be the most polished album in Dinosaur Jr.'s discography, but it more than makes up for it with its infectious energy and charming imperfections. So put on your flannel shirt, grab your skateboard, and crank up the volume - this album is a must-listen for anyone who loves their rock music with a side of nostalgia.

About the artist

Dinosaur Jr.

Dinosaur Jr. are the grandfather's of lo-fi indie rock, the kind of band that makes you want to grab a beat-up guitar and strum along in your garage. Hailing from Amherst, Massachusetts, this trio consists of J Mascis on vocals and guitar, Lou Barlow on bass and Murph on drums. With their debut album "Dinosaur" hitting the scene in 1985, these guys have been rocking out for over three decades. Their sound is a unique blend of punk, grunge and classic rock, with Mascis's fuzzy guitar licks and laid-back vocals stealing the show. But what really sets Dinosaur Jr. apart is their live performances. Mascis may look like a sleepy-eyed professor, but when he hits the stage, he transforms into a guitar god, shredding away with reckless abandon. Barlow and Murph provide the perfect rhythm section to keep the energy going, creating a sonic whirlwind that will leave you wanting more. Their 2016 album "Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not" proved that Dinosaur Jr. still have plenty of gas left in the tank. Tracks like "Goin Down" and "Tiny" are prime examples of their signature sound, with anthemic choruses and killer guitar solos that will have you headbanging in no time. So if you're a fan of raw, unapologetic rock 'n' roll, Dinosaur Jr. are a band you need to check out. They may be old-timers in the scene, but these guys can still teach the youngsters a thing or two about how to rock out with style.
