Our Take
Our Take
Mark Lanegan's Bubblegum is a wild ride through the seedy underbelly of rock and roll, with Lanegan's gravelly vocals leading the way. The album kicks off with "When Your Number Isn't Up," a brooding and atmospheric track that sets the dark tone for the rest of the album.
From there, things only get weirder and more wonderful. Lanegan explores themes of addiction, heartache, and redemption with a raw and unapologetic honesty that is both refreshing and unsettling. Tracks like "Methamphetamine Blues" and "Bombed" showcase Lanegan's ability to craft hauntingly beautiful melodies out of the darkest subject matter.
But it's not all doom and gloom on Bubblegum. Lanegan shows his lighter side on tracks like "Hit the City," a rollicking duet with PJ Harvey that is equal parts catchy and chaotic. The album also features appearances from the likes of Josh Homme, Izzy Stradlin, and Dean Ween, adding even more depth and diversity to Lanegan's already eclectic sound.
Overall, Bubblegum is a captivating and unpredictable journey that showcases Lanegan's talent as a songwriter and vocalist. It's a messy, noisy, and thoroughly enjoyable album that never fails to surprise. It may not be for everyone, but for those willing to take the plunge, Bubblegum offers a rewarding and thrilling listening experience.
