Our Take
Our Take
MICHAEL FEINBERG's latest release, Blues Variant, is a tantalising exploration of the intersection between jazz and blues that had us tapping our toes and snapping our fingers in delight. From the first note to the last, Feinberg's bass playing is slicker than a greased weasel on a slip 'n' slide.
The opening track, "Blues for Jaco," pays homage to the legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius with its funky groove and killer solos that could have even the grumpiest jazz purist breaking into a grin. Feinberg's bandmates on this record are no slouches either, with the guitar work on "Blue Line" is so fiery it might just set your speakers ablaze.
But it's not all high-octane shredding on Blues Variant; the album also has its tender moments. The ballad "Midnight Blue" is a soulful masterpiece, with Feinberg's bass singing like a lovestruck nightingale under a full moon.
While the album stays true to its jazz and blues roots, there are moments of experimentation that keep things fresh. The electronic touches on "Blues for Dave" add an unexpected twist that wouldn't be out of place in a cyberpunk nightclub.
Overall, Blues Variant is a triumph for Feinberg and his band, showcasing their virtuosity and creativity in equal measure. It's an album that will have you grooving, laughing, and maybe even shedding a tear – sometimes all at once. Trust us, you don't want to miss this one.
