Our Take
Ah, the Old 97's - the band that just can't seem to shake off their alt-country roots. With their latest offering, "Blame It On Gravity," they continue to toe the line between heartfelt Americana and unabashed rock 'n' roll. Opening track "The Fool" kicks things off with a gritty guitar riff and frontman Rhett Miller's signature drawl. It's a solid start, but the real magic happens on tracks like "Dance With Me" and "My Two Feet," where the band's energy is infectious and their hooks are as catchy as ever. The Old 97's may be getting older, but they haven't lost any of their edge. "Color of a Lonely Heart is Blue" is a standout track that showcases Miller's songwriting prowess and the band's ability to craft a timeless melody. Sure, there are a few missteps here and there - "Ride" feels a bit generic, and "No Baby I" drags on a bit too long - but overall, "Blame It On Gravity" is a solid addition to the Old 97's discography. Fans of the band will not be disappointed, and newcomers will find plenty to love in this mix of rock, country, and a whole lot of heart. So go ahead, blame it on gravity - but don't blame it on the Old 97's.
