Our Take

SUNN O)))'s "Black One" is an album that is so heavy, it will make your speakers beg for mercy. With droning guitars and bone-rattling bass, this album is not for the faint of heart. But if you're willing to take the plunge into the murky depths of doom metal, you will be rewarded with a sonic experience unlike any other.

From the opening track "Sin Nanna" to the closing notes of "Báthory Erzébet," SUNN O))) creates an atmosphere of pure darkness and despair. The vocals are sparse, often buried deep within the mix, adding to the sense of unease that permeates the album. When they do emerge, they are guttural and primal, like a feral beast howling in the night.

The production on "Black One" is top-notch, with every crushing riff and cavernous drum beat captured in exquisite detail. The album has a raw, organic feel that sets it apart from other metal releases of its time. It's as if you can feel the vibrations of each note reverberating through your bones.

Overall, "Black One" is a masterpiece of doom metal, a testament to the power of heavy music to transport you to another world. If you're brave enough to take the journey, you will be rewarded with an experience that is both terrifying and exhilarating. Just make sure to crank up the volume and brace yourself for impact.

About the artist

Sunn O)))

Sunshine, smiles, and laughter are not typically associated with the music of SUNN O))). This avant-garde metal outfit, formed in 1998 by Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley, is known for their bone-rattling, earth-shaking compositions that feel like a descent into the depths of a dark, cavernous abyss. SUNN O)))'s signature sound is characterized by slow, heavy riffs, droning guitars, and layers of distortion that create a wall of sound unlike anything you've ever experienced. Their music is not for the faint of heart - it's intense, abstract, and wholly immersive. With album titles like "Black One" and "Monoliths & Dimensions," SUNN O)))'s music is as monolithic and titanic as the names suggest. The band's live performances are legendary for their overwhelming volume and physical impact, with audiences often describing them as a visceral, transcendent experience. Despite their minimalistic approach to composition, SUNN O)))'s music is incredibly complex and rich in detail. Each album is a sonic odyssey that demands repeated listens to fully appreciate the layers of sound and texture at play. So, if you're looking for music that will melt your face and shake you to your core, look no further than SUNN O))). Just make sure you bring earplugs and a sturdy pair of boots - you're going to need them.
