Our Take

If Duke Ellington were a superhero, his special power would be making jazz cool again. And boy, does he deliver in this live recording from Berlin 1959. The energy is electric, the musicianship impeccable, and the audience clearly knows they're witnessing something special.

The album kicks off with the classic "Take the 'A' Train", and from there it's a non-stop ride of swinging rhythms and inventive solos. Duke's piano playing is as smooth as ever, effortlessly gliding through each tune with style and finesse.

The orchestra is on fire throughout the entire set, with standout performances from saxophonist Johnny Hodges and trumpeter Cootie Williams. They seem to be having the time of their lives on stage, and it's impossible not to get caught up in their infectious enthusiasm.

The highlight of the album has to be the epic 15-minute rendition of "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue". The band builds tension and excitement, showcasing Duke's genius as a composer and arranger. By the time they reach the explosive climax, you'll be on the edge of your seat, gasping for air.

In short, Berlin 1959 is a must-listen for any jazz enthusiast. It's a masterclass in musicality, showmanship, and pure joy. Duke Ellington may have left us years ago, but his music will always have the power to transport us to another time and place.
