Hewitt brings a touch of class to Beethoven's piano sonatas, but is it enough to make them pop? From the moment the first notes of Moonlight Sonata caress your eardrums, you know you're in for a wild ride. Hewitt's delicate touch and meticulous attention to detail shine through in every piece, from the explosive chords of the Pathetique to the haunting beauty of the Appassionata. But is it enough to make these well-worn classics feel fresh again?

While Hewitt's technical prowess is undeniable, there are moments where her interpretation feels a bit safe. Where's the risk, the edge, the sense of adventure that Beethoven himself would surely have appreciated? Don't get me wrong, there's plenty to love here – the cascading arpeggios of the Waldstein, the playful charm of the Pastoral – but at times it feels like Hewitt is holding back, afraid to push the envelope.

That being said, there are moments of pure magic on this album. The emotional depth of the Hammerklavier is truly breathtaking, and Hewitt's skillful navigation of its treacherous waters is a sight to behold. And let's not forget her spirited take on the Les Adieux, which practically bursts with joy and vitality.

In the end, Hewitt's Beethoven piano sonatas are a delightful treat for fans of the classics, but don't expect any groundbreaking revelations here. It's a solid effort, to be sure, but maybe next time, Angela could let loose a little more and show us what she's really made of.
