Our Take
Our Take
ERIC CLAPTON'S 'Backless' is a meandering stroll through the mind of a guitar legend who, despite his many accomplishments, can't seem to find a solid direction for this album. The songs range from forgettable soft rock numbers to uninspired covers, leaving the listener wondering if Clapton has lost his creative spark or if he simply can't be bothered to put in the effort.
The opening track, 'Walk Out in the Rain', sets the tone for the album with its lacklustre guitar work and generic lyrics. Clapton's vocals sound tired and uninspired, as if he's going through the motions rather than truly connecting with the music. The lack of energy is palpable throughout the album, with even the more uptempo tracks failing to ignite any real passion or emotion.
One of the few highlights of 'Backless' is the cover of JJ Cale's 'I'll Make Love to You Anytime', which showcases Clapton's bluesy guitar skills and reminds us of his undeniable talent. However, this moment of brilliance is fleeting, and the album quickly descends back into mediocrity.
Overall, 'Backless' feels like a missed opportunity for Clapton to showcase his legendary talents and create something truly special. Instead, we're left with a lacklustre collection of songs that fail to leave a lasting impression. Hopefully, Clapton's next album will see him rediscover his passion for music and deliver something truly memorable.
