Our Take
Ah, The Rubinoos. The band that time forgot, or did it forget them? Back to the Drawing Board sees these power-pop pioneers attempting to reclaim their place in the musical landscape. But does this nostalgia trip hit the right notes, or is it just another case of old dogs trying to learn new tricks? From the opening track, it's clear that The Rubinoos haven't lost their knack for crafting catchy, harmonious tunes. "Do You Remember" sets the tone with its infectious melody and nostalgic lyrics that will have you reminiscing about your own teenage crushes. But as the album progresses, it becomes evident that The Rubinoos may have spent a bit too long away from the limelight. Some tracks veer into cheesy territory, with lyrics that feel a bit too on the nose and production that lacks the polish of their earlier work. However, there are still moments of brilliance to be found on Back to the Drawing Board. "Phaedra" is a standout track that showcases the band's ability to blend pop sensibilities with a hint of melancholy, while "Forever" is a ballad that will tug at your heartstrings. Overall, Back to the Drawing Board is a mixed bag. While it's clear that The Rubinoos still have a spark of creativity left in them, this album may not be the triumphant return to form that fans were hoping for. But hey, at least they're still having fun.
