Our Take
Our Take
Ah, Traffic's latest release "Back to the Country" sees the band attempting to return to their roots with a foray into country-tinged rock. As a fan of their earlier work, I dove into this album with high expectations and, unfortunately, I was left feeling a bit...well, stuck in traffic.
From the opening track, it's clear that the band is attempting to channel the spirit of country legends like Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. However, what could have been a homage to the greats instead comes off as slightly forced and lacking the authenticity that made Traffic's previous work so captivating.
The instrumentation on "Back to the Country" is undeniably solid, with twangy guitar riffs and honky-tonk piano licks aplenty. But where the album falls short is in its songwriting, with lyrics that often feel cliché and uninspired. Tracks like "Truck Driving Blues" and "Broken Hearted Cowboy" lack the emotional depth that has come to define Traffic's best work.
That being said, there are still some highlights on this album. "Texas Moon" is a rollicking tune that shows glimpses of the band's former glory, while "Dust Bowl Dreams" has a haunting beauty to it that is worth a listen.
In the end, "Back to the Country" is a decent effort from Traffic, but it ultimately feels like a detour rather than a return to form. Here's hoping the band can find their way back to the highway of success on their next release.
