Our Take

Norwegian progressive black metal band Enslaved have always been a musical enigma, blending elements of black metal, Viking metal, and prog rock into a unique sonic concoction. On their 2010 release "Axioma Ethica Odini," they continue to push the boundaries of their genre-defying sound.

The album kicks off with the epic opener "Ethica Odini," a sprawling 9-minute journey through thunderous riffs, haunting melodies, and guttural vocals. It's a perfect showcase of Enslaved's ability to seamlessly meld brutality with beauty, creating a mesmerizing listening experience.

Tracks like "Raidho" and "Giants" showcase the band's penchant for crafting intricate, labyrinthine compositions that take the listener on a musical odyssey. The intricate guitar work, thunderous drumming, and atmospheric keyboards all blend together to create a dense, immersive soundscape that rewards repeated listens.

But it's not all serious business for Enslaved, as tracks like "Lightening" and "Axioma" inject a healthy dose of groove and swagger into the mix. It's refreshing to hear a band of Enslaved's pedigree not taking themselves too seriously and embracing their more playful side.

Overall, "Axioma Ethica Odini" is a masterclass in progressive black metal, showcasing Enslaved at the height of their powers. Fans of the band's earlier work will not be disappointed, and newcomers to the genre will find plenty to sink their teeth into. Enslaved have once again proven why they're one of the most innovative and exciting bands in metal today.

Enslaved are not your typical black metal band. Hailing from Norway, this eclectic group has been pushing the boundaries of the genre since the early 90s. Known for their progressive and experimental approach to music, Enslaved have carved out a unique niche for themselves in the metal scene. With a discography that spans over 14 albums, Enslaved have proven time and time again that they are not afraid to take risks and explore new sonic territories. From their early black metal roots to their more recent forays into progressive rock, Enslaved have never been content to rest on their laurels. One of the standout features of Enslaved's music is their use of intricate melodies and complex arrangements. Their songs are a masterclass in dynamics, seamlessly blending intense aggression with moments of introspection and beauty. Enslaved are also known for their thought-provoking lyrics, which tackle topics ranging from Norse mythology to environmentalism. This intellectual approach to songwriting sets them apart from many of their peers in the metal world. Their shows are a high-octane mix of blistering riffs, thunderous drums, and guttural screams that are sure to leave you breathless. In short, Enslaved are a band that defies categorization and transcends genre boundaries. Their music is a journey, a sonic adventure that will challenge and inspire you in equal measure. So strap in, crank up the volume, and let Enslaved take you on a ride you won't soon forget.
