Our Take

James Booker, the enigmatic New Orleans piano virtuoso, takes center stage at Onkel Pos Carnegie Hall with this electrifying live album. Known for his eccentric style and incredible technical prowess, Booker effortlessly captivates the audience from the first note to the last.

From the moment Booker sits down at the piano, you know you're in for a wild ride. His fingers dance across the keys with a frenetic energy that is both mesmerizing and exhilarating. His renditions of classics like "Junco Partner" and "St. James Infirmary" are imbued with a raw, emotional intensity that is sure to send shivers down your spine.

But it's not just Booker's piano playing that shines on this album. His soulful vocals bring a depth and richness to each track, pulling you in and refusing to let go. And let's not forget his showmanship - the man knows how to work a crowd like nobody else.

In a world where live albums can often feel sterile and lacking in energy, James Booker at Onkel Pos Carnegie Hall is a breath of fresh air. It's a reminder of the power of live music to move and inspire, and Booker's passion and talent shine through on every track.

So sit back, relax, and let James Booker take you on a musical journey you won't soon forget. Trust us, you won't regret it.

About the artist

James Booker

Ah, James Booker. The enigmatic and eccentric New Orleans pianist who captivated audiences with his virtuosic blend of jazz, blues, and R&B. Known as the "Piano Prince of New Orleans," Booker's unique playing style and flamboyant personality made him one of the most compelling figures in the city's rich musical history. Born in 1939, Booker began playing the piano at a young age, quickly demonstrating a prodigious talent that set him apart from his peers. His early influences included the likes of Jelly Roll Morton and Professor Longhair, but Booker's playing transcended mere imitation, incorporating elements of classical music, gospel, and even rock and roll. Booker's career was marked by both triumph and tragedy. His performances were legendary, showcasing his unparalleled virtuosity and improvisational skill. But behind the music lay a troubled soul, struggling with addiction and mental health issues that would ultimately cut short his life at the age of 43. Despite his demons, Booker's legacy endures, with his recordings still cherished by music lovers around the world. His influence can be heard in the playing of artists as diverse as Dr. John, Harry Connick Jr., and even Prince, who cited Booker as a major inspiration. So raise a glass to the Piano Prince, a true original whose music continues to beguile and enchant. In the words of Booker himself, "I play the piano for myself, but I play it for y'all too." And we're damn glad he did.
