Our Take

Moby, the vegan DJ with a heart of gold (and a love for sampling old gospel records), is back with a visceral, angsty new album "Animal Rights". This time around, Moby trades in his signature electronic beats for a punk rock aesthetic, complete with distorted guitars and primal screams.

From the aggressive opener "Now I Let It Go" to the melancholic closer "That's When I Reach For My Revolver", Moby channels his inner punk rocker with mixed results. While tracks like "Come on Baby" and "At My Worst" showcase Moby's ability to craft catchy hooks, others like "Face It" and "Living" fall flat with uninspired lyrics and repetitive chords.

But don't count Moby out just yet. When he hits his stride, as on the anthemic "Be the One" and the haunting "Love Song For My Mom", he proves why he's been a mainstay in the industry for over two decades. And let's not forget the unexpected cover of Mission of Burma's "That's When I Reach for My Revolver", which gives the album a much-needed dose of nostalgia.

Ultimately, "Animal Rights" is a bold departure for Moby, one that may alienate some fans but also attract new ones. In the end, isn't that what being an artist is all about? Moby may not have all the answers, but at least he's asking the questions.
