Our Take
Oh dear, dear Paper Lace. It seems this band just can't catch a break. Their new album "Paper Lace And Other Bits of Material/First Edition" is a mishmash of styles and genres that leaves us scratching our heads. The opening track, "Threadbare Melodies," could have been a promising start, with its catchy hooks and toe-tapping rhythm. But just as we start to get into it, the song veers off into a bizarre kazoo solo that leaves us wondering what on earth we're listening to. And don't even get us started on "Seamstress Blues." This track is just plain confusing, with its mix of folk and electronica that never quite gels. It's like trying to sew together pieces of fabric that just don't match. But then, just when we're ready to write off Paper Lace for good, they hit us with "Needle and Thread," a charming acoustic ballad that showcases the band's softer side. It's a moment of clarity in an otherwise chaotic album. Overall, "Paper Lace And Other Bits of Material/First Edition" is a patchwork of ideas that never quite come together. But hey, at least they're trying something different. And who knows, maybe their next album will be a perfect fit. We'll just have to wait and see.
