Our Take

Ah, Augustus Pablo, the king of the melodica. His latest offering, "Ancient Harmonies," is a mesmerising journey through dub reggae like no other. Pablo effortlessly weaves together intricate melodies with deep, rumbling basslines that will have you swaying in no time.

The album opens with "Skanking Easy," a laid-back groove that sets the tone for what's to come. Pablo's melodica playing is nothing short of sublime, floating effortlessly over the bouncing rhythms.

Tracks like "East of the River Nile" and "Cassava Piece" showcase Pablo's mastery of dub production, with swirling echo effects and hypnotic basslines that transport you to another dimension.

One of the standout moments on the album is the collaboration with legendary dub producer King Tubby on "Keep on Dubbing." The track is a masterclass in dub mixing, with layers of effects and reverb creating a dense, immersive sound experience.

Overall, "Ancient Harmonies" is a triumph for Augustus Pablo, reaffirming his status as one of the true innovators of dub reggae. So sit back, light up a fat spliff, and let the ancient harmonies of Augustus Pablo wash over you. Trust me, you won't regret it.

About the artist

Augustus Pablo

One of Jamaica's most revered and innovative musicians, Augustus Pablo was a true pioneer in the world of reggae music. Born Horace Swaby in St. Andrew, Jamaica in 1953, Pablo began his musical career as a skilled melodica player, earning his nickname from his admiration of Roman Emperor Augustus and his tendency to play melodica solos over classic reggae rhythms. Pablo's unique sound was a fusion of traditional Jamaican rhythms with elements of jazz and classical music, creating a hypnotic and ethereal vibe that set him apart from his contemporaries. His use of the melodica as a lead instrument was groundbreaking, and his innovative production techniques helped to define the sound of reggae in the 1970s. Despite his early success, Pablo was known for his eccentricities and reclusive nature, preferring to spend his time in his Kingston studio surrounded by his beloved vintage synthesizers and dub equipment. His enigmatic persona only added to his mystique, and his influence can still be felt in the music of artists ranging from Massive Attack to King Tubby. In a career that spanned over three decades, Augustus Pablo released numerous influential albums, including the classic "King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown", which is widely regarded as one of the greatest dub albums of all time. His legacy continues to inspire a new generation of musicians, and his music remains as fresh and vital as ever. Augustus Pablo may have been a man of few words, but his music spoke volumes.
