Our Take
Our Take
Shabaka Hutchings, the multi-talented saxophonist and bandleader, has once again dazzled us with his latest album "Afrikan Culture." As the title suggests, this record is a celebration of the rich and diverse musical traditions of the African continent, all filtered through Hutchings' unique and boundary-pushing artistic vision.
From the moment the first track kicks in, you're transported to a vibrant and pulsating world where jazz, funk, and traditional African rhythms collide with electrifying results. Hutchings' saxophone skills are on full display throughout the album, weaving in and out of intricate melodies and dizzying improvisations with a masterful precision.
But it's not just about Hutchings' virtuosity – the rest of his band, The Ancestors, also deserve a shoutout for their tight and dynamic performances. Each member brings their own distinct voice to the table, creating a sonic tapestry that is as rich and textured as a Kente cloth.
Standout tracks like "Black Skins, Black Masks" and "Crossing the River" showcase Hutchings' knack for blending the ancient and the modern, the traditional and the avant-garde, in a way that is both hypnotic and exhilarating. By the time the album comes to a close with the hauntingly beautiful "Ubuntu," you'll find yourself hitting repeat and diving back into this mesmerizing musical journey. "Afrikan Culture" is a triumph from start to finish, a bold and uncompromising statement from one of the most exciting voices in contemporary jazz. Don't sleep on this one, folks – Shabaka Hutchings is here to shake up the jazz world, one blazing sax solo at a time.
