Our Take

Suede's "A New Morning" is like a long-lost relic from the Britpop era, a dare-we-say-it aural time capsule that transports you back to the days of Union Jack-waving, Oasis vs. Blur feuds, and questionable fashion choices. The band's sixth studio album is a mixed bag of shimmering melodies and reflective lyricism, but ultimately falls short of recapturing the magic of their early '90s heyday.

Brett Anderson's distinctive vocals still soar and croon with trademarked angst and charisma, but the songwriting on "A New Morning" feels a bit lacklustre and uninspired. Tracks like "Positivity" and "Obsessions" try to recapture the band's past glories, but come across as pale imitations of their former hits.

That being said, there are moments of brilliance on this album. The haunting ballad "When the Rain Falls" showcases Anderson's emotional depth, while the epic "Untitled" builds to a crescendo of swirling guitars and dramatic strings. Suede still knows how to craft a memorable hook and create a sense of grandeur in their music, even if it doesn't always hit the mark.

In the end, "A New Morning" feels like a band struggling to find their footing in a changed musical landscape. While it may not reach the heights of "Dog Man Star" or "Coming Up," Suede's latest effort still offers glimpses of the magic that made them one of the defining bands of the '90s. Give it a listen, but don't expect to be blown away.
