Our Take
Our Take
Andy Mackay's latest offering, "3 Psalms," is a head-scratching journey through the mind of a man who seemingly can't decide if he wants to be a classical musician or a rock star. The album is a mishmash of styles, with Mackay's trademark saxophone weaving in and out of intricate arrangements and soaring melodies.
From the opening track, "Psalm 1," it's clear that Mackay is unafraid to take risks and push boundaries. The haunting vocals and evocative lyrics draw the listener in, only to be abruptly interrupted by a cacophony of brass and drums. It's a daring move, but one that pays off in spades.
"Psalm 2" sees Mackay diving headfirst into experimental territory, with dissonant chords and unexpected time signatures keeping the listener on their toes. The saxophone takes center stage once again, wailing and screeching in a way that is both thrilling and slightly unsettling.
Closing track "Psalm 3" is perhaps the most accessible of the three, with a catchy melody and infectious groove that will have you tapping your feet in no time. Mackay's skill as a composer and arranger is on full display here, as he effortlessly blends elements of jazz, rock, and classical music into a cohesive whole.
Overall, "3 Psalms" is a bold and challenging album that will leave you scratching your head one minute and humming along the next. Andy Mackay may not be a household name, but after listening to this album, you'll wonder why he isn't.
