Jalen Brunson may have conquered Madison Square Garden during the New York Knicks’ historic championship run, but even the Finals MVP could not secure a place on every exclusive guest list in Manhattan.
Reflecting on Taylor Swift’s appearance at the 2026 NBA Finals, Brunson described having the pop superstar in attendance as “really cool”. It was another surreal detail in a season that ended with the Knicks winning their first NBA championship since 1973—a sentence New Yorkers will probably continue repeating until somebody asks them politely to leave the restaurant.
Swift’s presence added yet another layer of celebrity electricity to the Finals. Madison Square Garden has always operated somewhere between basketball arena, concert venue and unusually loud royal court. When one of the world’s biggest musicians appears courtside, however, even the famous faces begin looking around to see what everybody else is looking at.
Still, Brunson clarified that his connection to Swift did not extend to an invitation to her wedding to Travis Kelce. The couple married at Madison Square Garden on 3 July, transforming the Knicks’ home court into an elaborate indoor forest for a celebration reportedly attended by around 1,000 guests. Brunson, despite spending much of the previous month producing miracles in the same building, was not among them.
There is something wonderfully 2026 about the entire sequence. First, Swift watched Brunson perform at the Garden; weeks later, the arena became the setting for her wedding. The venue had barely finished sweeping away the championship confetti before welcoming Stevie Nicks, Paul McCartney and enough foliage to make Central Park feel professionally threatened.
For music fans, Swift’s NBA Finals visit belonged to a long tradition of pop stars becoming part of sporting mythology. Jack Nicholson had the Lakers, Spike Lee had the Knicks and Swift’s relationship with American football turned televised crowd reactions into their own small entertainment industry. Her appearance during New York’s title run now occupies another page in that peculiar scrapbook where sport, music and celebrity become impossible to separate.
Brunson can hardly feel too disappointed. He finished the summer with a championship, Finals MVP honours and three individual ESPY awards. Swift got the enchanted Garden wedding; Brunson got his name written permanently into Knicks history. In New York, those are simply two different ways of selling out the same room.
